Still, if you want to play older versions, i suggest you use MultiMC instead of the official launcher, as the official one lacks features (it doesn't let you choose Java version for example) and thus you'll have issues. then, if the game is tiny and only in a corner, try setting it to full screen - this means that you're using Java 8 on a version that was actually made for Java 7, but there's no problem in fullscreen, the incompatibility is only in windowed mode. MultiMC separates data automatically between instances. it can corrupt your worlds and also create graphical glitches (it lets you choose another directory when you create a new profile and choose an old version). also, if you're using the official launcher, please set a custom directory for data instead of using your everyday one. You need to use Java 7 or Java 8, depending on how old they are.
